You will be working with elite performance resources, including a bespoke altitude chamber to monitor the physical effects of training at altitude and a sports performance suite used by professional athletes to take their training to the next level.
On site we have our very own climbing wall and industry standard high ropes course, not to mention a low ropes course, orienteer course and bush craft area.
Our kit store boasts a fleet of Lapierre mountain bikes, white water kayaks and canoes, full range of climbing and winter mountaineering equipment and archery kit. We own Laser Pico and RS Vision sailing boats and have access to some fantastic locations nearby.
You will regularly engage in a wide range of activities led by our specialist team of qualified instructors who will support you in and out of your comfort zone when rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, mountaineering, mountain biking and sailing.
Gain practical experience on study tours
Make the most of your university experience with study tours and expeditions in the UK and overseas. In the past, our undergraduates have visited the Alps to gain experience of the snow sports industry, undertaken a week-long sail training voyage as part of the crew with the Rona Sailing Project and braved sub-zero conditions on a winter skills course in the Cairngorms.
Our campus is in easy reach of the best outdoor environments the UK has to offer – with Cannock Chase, the Lake District, the Peak District and North Wales being in close proximity.
Practical hands-on training, such as the tailormade courses we run in partnership with Reaseheath, is essential for those who want to work in the adventure sports industry.
By accommodating students here at our flagship centre we are able to offer them a taste of what it’s like to work in the industry and allow them to gain experience in a wide variety of adventurous activities.
This enables them to choose which direction to take and fully prepares them for their career.
Your course will integrate academic learning, outdoor activities, optional study tours and National Governing Body Coaching Awards* to fully prepare you for a career in the adventure sports sector.
Prepare with a work placement
To prepare for your future career, you will be able to complete a relevant work placement†. This could be undertaken at outdoor centres and schools, or even completed overseas. There are also many opportunities for volunteering work in this sector, which will make a powerful addition to your CV.
Gain extra qualifications
In addition to your core modules, you can choose to train for National Governing Body Awards* from well recognised organisations such as British Canoeing, British Cycling and Mountain Training. I’m already working as an outdoor sports instructor but the short term dream is to do a ski instructor‘s qualification in Canada, then teach skiing in the winter and paddling, climbing and mountain biking in the summer. I’d have a great work balance and the opportunity to travel all over the world!
