From industry leader to educational champion – new Dean’s vision for University Centre Reaseheath

As a fresh wave of students embark on their academic journeys at Reaseheath College and University Centre Jane Nickisson, the new Dean of Higher Education and Assistant Principal is looking forward to the year ahead.

Dean of HE at UCR, Jane Nickisson

Having recently joined the Reaseheath family, Jane is eager to shape the future of University Centre Reaseheath and inspire the next generation of land-based professionals.

With a rich tapestry of experiences spanning industry leadership and education, Jane brings a unique perspective to her role. From her early days in the tourism sector to her current position at Reaseheath, her career has been marked by a pursuit of excellence and a deep-rooted passion for empowering students.

With an 18-year career in Further and Higher Education and a dynamic background in the events and tourism industry, Jane brings a wealth of expertise and vision to the Reaseheath community.

Since joining Reaseheath, she has focused on enhancing the institution’s position as a leading provider of land-based higher education in the North West. Jane is committed to aligning the curriculum with industry demands and passionate about introducing more Higher Technical Qualifications to better prepare students for the workforce.

“Our curriculum is designed to meet the ever-evolving needs of the land-based sector, and my goal is to continue our vision for developing industry focused, career ready students who are fully equipped for the demands of the workforce,” she explains.

Jane values University Centre Reaseheath’s comprehensive support system for undergraduates, from their initial visit to graduation and appreciates the holistic and community-oriented approach that defines the Reaseheath experience, where students can complete their entire post-16 journey from level 1 to 6 on a single site campus.

“The support system at Reaseheath is fantastic,” says Jane. “It provides a nurturing and safe environment, allowing students to focus on their studies and personal growth.”

Jane’s own career journey is a testament to her resilience and adaptability. Initially facing unexpected A-Level results, rather than opting for the traditional university route, she pursued her love for languages and gained hands-on experience in France with a large Tour Operator after finishing school.  This sparked her interest in the sector, leading her to choose an HND in Tourism Management at Loughborough College.  This practical education, coupled with industry-based insights, set the stage for her future success.  Jane then went on to complete her honours degree via a top-up route at University of Hertfordshire.

“My own route into higher education wasn’t conventional. I did HE in an FE setting, so I really understand and value that experience. It’s about finding your passion and making the most of the opportunities available,” she reflects.

Her professional career began at inward investment firm Locate in Kent, where she coordinated significant marketing projects, including an international conference in France to promote Eurostar. Subsequent roles in marketing, recruitment, and talent management took her around the globe, working with companies such as First Choice, Universal, Travel Counsellors and Kelly Services. These roles honed her skills in management, collaboration, relationship building, and problem-solving.

Almost two decades ago, Jane transitioned to Higher Education with a part-time teaching role at Manchester College where she brought her industry experience into the classroom, before quickly advancing to HE Quality Manager. Leadership roles at Salford and Trafford College – two of the largest providers of Higher Education in a college setting in the North West – further solidified her expertise in managing large student populations and ensuring academic quality.

At University Centre Reaseheath, Jane focuses on maintaining strong industry ties, ensuring students receive a practical and relevant education.

“Our industry connections ensure our curriculum is practical and relevant,” she explains. “This prepares our students to step confidently into their chosen careers.”

She is dedicated to nurturing inclusivity, innovation, and academic rigour, enhancing both student learning experiences and faculty professional development. Her vision includes a curriculum review to ensure it remains industry focused and the introduction of some Higher Technical Qualifications to support the launch of the Cheshire and Warrington Institute of Technology (IOT) which Reaseheath is a key member of.

Jane also values Reaseheath’s unique campus-based accommodation, offering a mini university experience with the support of a caring college. “University Centre Reaseheath is like a small land-based university with the support and infrastructure of a caring college,” she says. “There really is nothing else like it in the North West.”

Jane emphasises the importance of University Centre Reaseheath’s partnership with the University of Chester, providing students access to research-focused education and robust academic support.

“Our collaboration with the University of Chester ensures high-quality, research-informed education,” Jane says.

Her dedication to excellence, inclusivity, and innovation promises to enhance Reaseheath’s reputation as a leading provider of land-based Higher Education in the North West and she looks forward to welcoming new students as they take the next steps on their education journey.

“At University Centre Reaseheath, we offer an inclusive community where undergraduates gain confidence and skills to grow and achieve with their degree,” she says.

“Our degree programmes are designed and delivered in conjunction with the industries we serve, to ensure our students are career ready upon graduation. We provide a balanced emphasis on academic and practical skills, preparing our graduates to excel in their future careers.

“I am excited to welcome new students to our vibrant campus. I wish everyone joining us this September all the best in your studies and look forward to seeing you thrive and succeed in our supportive and dynamic learning environment.”
