In celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8th, University Centre Reaseheath had published a special podcast episode showcasing the fascinating world of sharks.

The episode sees Donovan Lewis, lecturer and course manager for the Animal Management degree at University Centre Reaseheath in conversation with Don Clarke, HE Academic Service Officer,  open up about his extraordinary career working with sharks, his experiences as a PADI diver, and his role as a diver at Blue Planet in Ellesmere Port.

In the podcast, Donovan shares his deep passion for sharks, describing them as ‘charismatic ocean animals’ and explaining why diving with these majestic creatures is not just a career highlight but a life-changing experience. He recounts some of his most thrilling encounters underwater and discusses how these moments have shaped his understanding of marine life and conservation.

As well as celebrating the beauty and importance of sharks, Donovan also addresses the urgent threats they face due to climate change, pollution, and habitat destruction. He discusses the broader impact these environmental issues have on ocean ecosystems and highlights the crucial need for conservation efforts to protect shark populations and marine biodiversity.

For those considering a career in marine biology or conservation, Donovan also offers valuable advice for young people looking to get involved in this exciting and rewarding field.

His personal journey from diving enthusiast to leading expert in the animal management sector is an inspiring reminder of the potential for individuals to make a lasting impact in the world of environmental conservation.

Donovan said: “Sharks are not the terrifying creatures many people think they are. They are charismatic, vital to marine ecosystems, and incredibly important to our understanding of ocean health.

“My message to young people is that, with dedication, passion, and the right opportunities, you can pursue a career that allows you to connect with these amazing creatures and work to protect them for future generations.”
