Students organise events to help save hedgehogs

Three Access to Higher Education students organised events on campus recently to help save hedgehogs, which are currently vulnerable to extinction.

The project was organised in response to the number of hedgehogs in the UK falling dramatically in recent years, due to several threats including roads, damage to woodlands and hedgerows which impacts suitable shelter, and the use of pesticides on farms and gardens which impacts food sources.

As part of the project the students set up a stall on campus to raise awareness of these dangers and distributed information about what could be done. The team was also available to answer any questions our staff and students had about keeping hedgehogs safe.

The thoughtful students organised a litter pick across campus too, which over 20 staff and students volunteered for, to ensure we offer a safe and clean space for hedgehogs to live.

Lauren, Jay and Elizabeth organised the project as part of the event management module of their Access to HE diplomas, to support the hedgehogs we have on campus and to help Reaseheath achieve the bronze hedgehog friendly campus award.
