Caring for primates once filled Elisabeth Poulson’s days – early starts, heavy feed buckets, and the quiet reward of watching animals thrive under her care. That same instinct to help and protect led her to a new chapter in animal welfare: veterinary nursing.
Last week, she walked across the stage at Chester Cathedral (November 6) to collect her BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Nursing graduating with First-Class Honours and a renewed sense of pride in how far she’s come.
“I started my career with animals as a zookeeper caring for primates,” she says. “That came to a natural end after five years. I knew I wanted to continue working with and benefiting the lives of animals, and veterinary nursing felt like the next step.”
Originally from Clitheroe, moving and settling in Cheshire made University Centre Reaseheath the natural choice. “It was easily commutable, and it was great to find they offered the veterinary nursing degree,” she explains. “I also had friends who’d studied there and spoke really highly of their experience.”
The road wasn’t always smooth. “Following some health problems both in my family and personally, the final year became particularly difficult,” Elisabeth admits.
“Having the support of my lecturers was amazing – they were flexible with coursework and always there to help. My family and friends also kept pushing me through the final stretch.”
That perseverance saw her achieve the personal goal she’d set from the start. “I began the course with a challenge to myself to finish with a first-class degree and I was thrilled when I did. There were certainly times I didn’t think it was possible, but I kept pushing myself.”
Her lecturers and placement colleagues left a lasting impression. “The teaching at university gave me a really thorough understanding of the subject,” she says. “My placement was also fantastic I had great teachers there who shared their practical skills and years of knowledge. I’ve definitely met friends for life.”
Now part of Cheshire Cardiology referral practice in Northwich, Elisabeth is looking forward to where the next stage of her journey takes her. “I have a particular interest in anaesthesia, surgery, and exotics but I’m looking forward to anything and everything that’s thrown at me.”
