Canine undergraduates gain real-world insight from leading microbiome scientist

Canine and animal science students at Reaseheath College and University Centre were given a unique insight into real-world research during a recent visit from leading canine microbiome scientist Dr Bushra Schuitemaker.

Dr Schuitemaker, Head of Science and Research at specialist microbiome laboratory BIOME9, and has recently appeared on Jamie Oliver series Eat Yourself Healthy, spent time with students discussing how laboratory science underpins modern approaches to canine health, nutrition and welfare.

During the session, students explored how microbiome data is generated and analysed in a commercial research setting, and how this data can be applied to academic work. BIOME9 data produced in the lab is being used by a number of Reaseheath students as part of their dissertation research, giving them valuable experience working with industry-relevant datasets.

The visit was organised by Paige McCormack, Lecturer in Canine Behaviour at Reaseheath, as part of a wider commitment to linking classroom learning with industry practice.

Paige said: “Opportunities like this are incredibly valuable for our students. Hearing directly from someone working at the forefront of canine microbiome research helps them see how the science they’re learning is applied in the real world and gives real context to the data they’re using for their dissertations.”

Students described the session as both inspiring and reassuring, helping them connect theory with potential career pathways in science, animal health and research-led roles.

Dr Schuitemaker added: “It’s always encouraging to see students engaging so positively with real data and asking thoughtful questions about how research translates into practice. Giving students access to live datasets and industry insight helps build confidence and shows them the range of opportunities available within science and animal health.”

The visit forms part of Reaseheath’s ongoing commitment to providing industry-linked learning experiences, ensuring students graduate with the skills, confidence and practical understanding needed to progress into further study or employment.
