Veterinary nursing degree awarded RCVS accreditation

University Centre Reaseheath’s BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Nursing has been fully accredited by the industry’s leading professional body, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

The accreditation proves that this degree programme achieves the strict standards set by the RCVS and positions University Centre Reaseheath (UCR) as a leading provider of undergraduate veterinary nursing education and training. Successful graduates qualify for their highly recognised and respected Registered Veterinary Nurse status without the need for further training and can confidently move forward within their profession with a licence to practice.

The programme has been developed and delivered by UCR’s specialist veterinary teaching team over the past four years, during which time it has been under intense scrutiny from the RCVS. Its first cohort will graduate this November, with 100% pass rate, at a ceremony hosted by our university partner, the University of Chester. All undergraduates in this cohort have progressed into full time jobs – many with the training practices where they spent their year’s placement.

Integral to the accreditation was a recent inspection of the Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), the final assessments undertaken by undergraduates. Overseen by the RCVS Examinations Manager, UCR’s veterinary nursing team orchestrated, administrated and facilitated these inaugural OSCEs seamlessly, receiving rare praise and commendation.

The team also received outstanding feedback from undergraduates, who praised the support and expertise of our teaching staff and clinical placement co-ordinators.  Undergraduates must complete a minimum of 52 weeks in clinical placements during their four years of study and the dedication of our practice liaison officers has secured an increased number of training practice opportunities to support effective clinical learning.

Our undergraduates have also benefitted from expert visiting speakers and additional ‘journal club’ sessions which explore evidence based critique of current practice.

Dean of Higher Education Peter Greenall said: “The UCR veterinary nursing team have worked tirelessly to develop this professional degree and have done everything possible to make it an exceptional undergraduate experience.

“We are delighted that the quality of the programme has been recognised and rewarded with RCVS accreditation.”

As well as its substantial clinical placement, UCR’s BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Nursing supports practical study in modern laboratories and dedicated clinical skills suites. Undergraduates are taught using up to date and relevant equipment to ensure they are confident and industry ready.

The accreditation has enabled UCR to expand capacity on this course and additional places are available for September 2023. See  https://ucreaseheath.ac.uk/bsc-hons-veterinary-nursing
